Price index
What October cost, against what November costs so far, for the same products at the same retailers. 13,068 products had a recorded price in both months, and 2358 of them are cheaper now. The figures move until the month ends; each finished month is kept as a release below.

How the number is built
- Each product gets one figure per month: the median of every price we recorded for it that month. A median rather than an average, so a single flash sale does not become the month.
- A product counts only where we have that figure for both months. Products we started tracking this month contribute nothing, which is why the category number cannot be moved by our own catalogue growing.
- “Typical change” is the median of those per-product changes. Cheaper and dearer count movements of at least 1% — below that is repricing noise, and calling it a change would be spending the word on nothing.
- Open-box and used listings are excluded, and so are retailers we have switched off. Amazon prices are included here: this is a figure computed from their prices, not a republication of them.
This is an index of what we watch, not of the US retail market. We track 12,730 products at 1 retailer, chosen because people search for them; nobody should read a national inflation figure out of that. How we verify prices, and the observations behind every row are downloadable at /data.
