Are Amazon Lightning Deals worth it?
The 304 Lightning Deals in our record were a median 16.8% under the price just before them and stood a median 8.5 hours. Every one was lower than the price it replaced.
Usually a real cut, and a short one. A Lightning Deal, a Prime-members price and a limited-time deal are three different offers under one red label: they differ in how deep the cut is, how long it stands, and now and then in whether it is a cut at all. The table below measures all three from our own record.

Three badges, three different offers
A Lightning Deal is open to everyone and runs until its time slot ends or its allotted units sell out, whichever comes first. The percent-claimed bar on the listing is the second clock: at 90% the price can be gone before the timer says so.
A Prime-members price is only yours if you pay for Prime. A Prime Early Access deal is members-only for its early window and then opens to everyone, so the same badge changes meaning partway through. We track that switch: a price marked for members here was members-only when we read it.
Everything else Amazon badges as a deal — "Limited time deal" is the common one — has an end date, no claimed bar and no membership gate. It is the plainest of the three, which is why it gets the least attention and deserves the most checking.
The badge is printed beside a number the seller chose
The percentage on a deal badge is measured against a "was" or "list" price that the seller supplies. That number does not have to be a price anyone recently paid. So we measure a badge differently: against the price the same item carried at the same retailer on the reading just before the badge appeared. That is the price you would actually have paid without it.
Measured that way, most badges are real cuts, and a few are not. The last column of the table counts badged prices that were no lower than the unbadged price they replaced — a deal label on the same number, or on a higher one.
How long you have to decide
Our record is written only when a price changes, so the gap between a badged price and the next change is exactly how long that price stood. The table reports the median of those gaps, over badges that have already ended. One still running has no end yet and is left out, rather than counted as if it had finished early — which would make every badge look shorter than it is.
Read the hours as a deadline, not a countdown. A badge type whose prices typically stand for a day gives you an evening to compare. One whose prices typically stand for a few hours is one where comparing costs you the price.
What to do with a badge in front of you
Open the product’s price history before the badge. If today’s badged price is not below the typical price the history shows, the badge is decoration, whatever its percentage says.
For a Lightning Deal, look at the claimed bar as well as the timer, and decide now or let it go — waiting is the one move the format punishes. For a members price, check you are signed in to a Prime account before comparing; the price a non-member pays is the unbadged one. For a limited-time deal, compare against the median, never against the crossed-out number.

Prices that fell in the last week
Measured against the price each item held at the same retailer before it fell, not against a claimed former price. A badge is not required to appear here, and many of these carried none.

Questions people ask
- How long does a Lightning Deal last?
- Amazon runs each one for a fixed slot or until its allotted units sell out, whichever comes first — so it can end early. The table on this page shows how long Lightning Deal prices actually stood in our record, as a median over deals that have ended.
- Is a Prime-exclusive price a real discount?
- Usually, measured against the price the item carried just before, and the table shows the median cut. It is only a discount if you are a Prime member: everyone else pays the unbadged price.
- What is the difference between a Lightning Deal and a limited-time deal?
- A Lightning Deal has a unit allotment as well as an end time, and shows how much of it has been claimed. A limited-time deal has an end date and no claimed bar. Both are open to everyone unless marked for Prime members.
- Can a deal badge show on a price that did not drop?
- Yes. The badge percentage is measured against a price the seller supplies, not against the last price the item sold for. The last column of the table counts badged prices that were no lower than the price just before them.
