Three kinds share the shelf
Smartwatches, fitness trackers and smart rings are counted together here, and the type table below splits them. A smartwatch has a screen you read and apps you run. A fitness tracker is a slim band with a small screen or none, built to count steps, sleep and heart rate. A smart ring tracks much the same with no screen at all and shows its readings in a phone app. One middle price across the three describes none of them, so compare within a type.
What Apple charges for its own
Apple’s own store starts the Apple Watch SE 3 at $249, the Series 12 at $399 and the Ultra 4 at $799; a larger case, a cellular model or a dearer finish costs more on top. The Series 12 and Ultra 4 went on sale on September 18, 2026, and the models they replaced can stay on sale beside them while stock lasts, so check the model before setting two prices side by side.
An Apple Watch is set up and used with an iPhone. With an Android phone, look at Wear OS watches such as Samsung’s Galaxy Watch and Google’s Pixel Watch, or at Garmin, which works with both.
The subscription after the purchase
Some of these cost money every month after the purchase. Oura’s membership is $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US, and without it the app shows only the three daily scores. Whoop sells no band on its own: a year’s membership with the band included is $199, $239 or $359, depending on the tier. Garmin’s Connect+ is optional, at $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year, and what Garmin Connect already did stays free.
Add a year or two of a membership to the price of a ring or a band before comparing it with a watch that needs none.
