When Subscribe & Save is actually cheaper

How the stack works

Amazon's subscription discount is 5% on a single active subscription and 15% once five or more items ship in the same month. A clippable coupon, when one exists, applies before the subscription discount rather than after — which is why the headline "$2.18 each" on a stacked offer is a smaller number than either discount alone would produce.

That is also why the price on the product page is not the price you pay. The price we record is the one-off price Amazon quotes; the coupon and the subscription discount come off at checkout, in the order above, so the arithmetic starts from that number.

The three cases where it loses

First: the base price rose before the discount applied. A subscription is a standing order at whatever the price is on the shipping date, not at the price you saw when you signed up.

Second: you cancel before the second delivery. The 15% tier needs five items in one month, so a single cancelled subscription usually earns 5%, not the number on the badge.

Third: the item is cheaper elsewhere outright. A 20% stack on an inflated price is worse than a flat price at another retailer — and whether the base price is inflated is exactly what the record on our product page shows.

What to check before subscribing

Look at the item's own 90-day history first. If today's base price is already above its median, the discount is being applied to a number that is itself high, and the total may be ordinary.

Then check the delivery date. A subscription that ships in three weeks is priced in three weeks, and nothing about today's badge is a promise about that.
