Prime by the month or by the year

Twelve months of the monthly plan cost $179.88; the yearly fee is $139, $40.88 less, a 22% saving. It pays for itself if you would keep Prime for more than 9 months.

The monthly plan suits buying for one sale: Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days prices are for members, and a monthly membership can be cancelled once the sale is over. Some states charge sales tax on Prime, on top of these prices.

When Prime went up

Prime launched at $79 a year in 2005. Amazon raised it to $99 in March 2014, to $119 on May 11, 2018, and to $139 on February 18, 2022. The monthly plan went from $10.99 to $12.99 on January 19, 2018, and to $14.99 in 2022.

The last two rises came four years apart. As of October 7, 2026, Amazon has announced none this year.

Prime Video with and without ads

Prime Video comes with Prime, with ads. Since April 10, 2026, watching without them is Prime Video Ultra, $4.99 a month or $45.99 a year on top of Prime. It replaced the $2.99 Ad Free option and adds 4K, Dolby Atmos and five streams at once; 4K left the standard plan. Prime Video alone, without the rest of Prime, is $8.99 a month.

Audible, Kindle Unlimited and Music Unlimited

Audible Standard, $8.99 a month since March 3, 2026, gives one audiobook a month from the whole catalog plus a library of others, and the books stay only while you subscribe. Premium Plus, $14.95 a month, gives a credit a month, and the books are yours to keep after you cancel. Paid by the year it is $149.50 for 12 credits, $12.46 a book, or $229.50 for 24, $9.56 a book.

Kindle Unlimited is $11.99 a month, its price since May 11, 2023; it was $9.99 from its launch in 2014. It lends e-books from its own catalog of more than five million titles, not every Kindle book, to any Kindle or the Kindle app.

Music Unlimited is $10.99 a month with Prime and $11.99 without, prices in force since January 29, 2025, and includes one Audible audiobook a month while you subscribe. Prime on its own includes ad-free Amazon Music with shuffle play.

Free trials, and how long each lasts

Prime’s free trial is 30 days and Prime for Young Adults’ is six months; both renew at the prices in the table unless cancelled. Prime for Young Adults also pays 5% cash back on badged items in five categories, for as long as Amazon runs the offer.

Kindle Unlimited offers a free trial to accounts Amazon deems eligible, shows its length at sign-up, and from time to time runs promotional trials. A Kindle bought with the three-months-of-Kindle-Unlimited option comes with three months, after which it renews at $11.99 a month; cancelling during those three months refunds nothing. Any Kindle Unlimited trial is cancelled at amazon.com/kucentral.

Music Unlimited and Audible change their trial offers with each sale, so the offer in force is the one on each program’s own page, linked under the table.
