How much is a TV? Today’s prices

Middle price today $498.50; by brand, $762.97 for Samsung, $1,249.99 for LG and $498.99 for TCL. Half of the 126 TVs we can price sit between $210.27 and $997.99.

Screen size sets most of a TV’s price and the kind of panel most of the rest, so one average across a 32-inch set and an 85-inch OLED helps nobody. The size and brand tables below are today’s Amazon prices for every new TV we track.

Size first

The size table below prices each screen class we can count today; read it before anything else. The number in a TV’s name is a class, not a measurement: a 65-inch class set usually has a screen of about 64.5 inches, corner to corner. Compare class with class, and read the exact size on the spec sheet if the half-inch matters.

Then the panel

At one size the price tends to climb with the panel: a standard LED set, then QLED, then Mini-LED, then OLED. QLED adds a quantum-dot layer for richer colour. Mini-LED lights the screen with thousands of small LEDs dimmed in zones, for brighter highlights and deeper blacks. OLED lights each pixel itself, so black is a pixel switched off rather than dimmed.

The panel is often in the model name rather than the headline: TCL’s QM7L and QM8L and Hisense’s U8 are Mini-LED, LG’s C series and Samsung’s S90 are OLED. Check it before setting two prices side by side — a 65-inch LED set can cost less than a 55-inch OLED.

What the brand adds

Sony and LG have the highest middle prices in the brand table below, but most makers sell across the range: TCL and Hisense from budget sets to Mini-LED flagships, Samsung from its Crystal UHD line to OLED. Read a brand’s cheapest price beside its middle one; the gap between them is the range it sells.

Last year’s model

TV lines are replaced every year: makers show the new ones at CES in January and ship them in spring. The outgoing model often stays on sale beside its successor, for less, until stock runs out. Check the model year in a listing before comparing its price with another; product pages here give the release date where the listing states it.

$730.76 across the 126 TVs we can price today, against a middle price of $498.50. The average sits above the middle because a few of the dearest models pull it, so the middle price is the better guide to what a typical one costs. One price per product, the cheapest live offer, read in the last few hours.
Why is a TV size called a class?
Because the number in the name is rounded. A 65-inch class TV usually has a screen of about 64.5 inches measured diagonally; the maker names the class and prints the exact viewable size in the specifications.
Why is a bigger TV sometimes cheaper than a smaller one?
Because the kind of panel can move the price more than the size. A 65-inch LED set can cost less than a 55-inch OLED, so compare sizes within one model line, where the panel is the same.
