Memorial Day 2027 falls on Monday, May 31, the last Monday in May. It opens the outdoor season, which is why the discounts here are shallower than Labor Day on the same goods.

The start of a season, not the end of one

Memorial Day sells the same categories as Labor Day (grills, patio furniture, mattresses) but at the beginning of their season rather than the end. Retailers are stocking up, not clearing out, so the cuts are typically smaller.

The practical consequence: if you can wait a full season, September is usually cheaper for the identical item. If you need it in June, this is the weekend it is discounted at all.

What to check

Compare the weekend price with the same item's price in the preceding six weeks, not with the crossed-out number on the tag. Seasonal goods often rise in April as demand appears, which makes a May "discount" a return to the March price.

That pattern shows on any item watched through a spring, and it is the reason our pages compare against a recorded median rather than a claimed original.

Was the Memorial Day price real?

For every product we track, we take the lowest price we recorded from May 31 to May 31 and set it against the median price it held over the 45 days from April 2 to May 16, or over the days since we began watching it, where that came later and leaves at least 14. The comparison stops two weeks before the sale, so a price raised in the run-up cannot pass for the normal one. A cut has to be at least 5% below that. We judge a product only when one seller held it through the baseline and set its sale low too: when Amazon restocks under a reseller’s price, the price falls without anyone cutting it.

The report appears here on June 1, the day after the sale ends. Until then there is nothing honest to say about it.
